How to Choose a Lawyer

Ask friends or relatives for references- A client needs to feel that they can trust a lawyer and following up via a recommendation from someone whose opinion they already trust is a good start.
Consult another lawyer in a general practice about a specific type of law- Much like asking a doctor for a referral, lawyers know lawyers so use their connections to find someone practicing outside their jurisdiction.
Legal directories can be good resources to find someone in the area- Typically more useful if the field needed is more specific.
Martindale Hubbell is the most comprehensive directory of reputable lawyers of all types of law.
Lawyers.com is another good resource.
Specialty Bar Associations, if available, are good resources.
Advertisements in the Yellow Pages, as well as on the radio and television can be a good start to the process- Can be followed up with more comprehensive information gathered during an initial consultation.

Questions to Ask a Prospective Lawyer

Has this type of case been handled by your firm before?
Do you belong to a bar association or trial lawyer organizations?
Have you been asked to speak at lectures about cases pertaining to this particular subject?
Have you ever been disciplined?
Who will work on the case?.
Do you have malpractice insurance?
How do you determine your fee?
